BMW R 1250 GS Package Options Explained: Let's Clear the Confusion

BMW R 1250 GS Package Options Explained: Let's Clear the Confusion

For as popular as the GS has been over the years for adventure riders, we can all agree BMW has not made the package options particularly easy to understand.

Having multiple package options is one thing, but also compounding the problem is that sometimes the package options would have some overlapping features—or worse yet, excluded features—between them.

Not only has this made the buying choice hard for consumers, but it’s also confusing and potentially more expensive.

For the 2022 R 1250 GS, BMW has made an attempt to streamline the package options to make them easier to understand and choose between. Mechanically, however, the 1250 GS remains the same as last year.

Technically there are still three different packages—Enduro, Select, and Premium—but in reality there are only two. This will make more sense in a moment as we explain the package options.

Ultimately, they are more streamlined to make the buying decision easier. Let’s take a look at what’s included in each.

BMW R 1250 GS Select Package

BMW R 1250 GS Select Package

The less expensive of the two packages, the Select package includes:

  • Side case holders
  • Keyless ride
  • Cruise control
  • GPS preparation
  • Heated grips
  • TPM (Tire Pressure Monitors)
  • Hand protection
  • Chrome exhaust pipe

BMW R 1250 GS Enduro Package

The Enduro package is the least expensive of the three options but is an important one for the GS rider who wants a more focused off-road-capable motorcycle. This package includes:

  • Off-road tires
  • Handlebar risers
  • Sport suspension
  • Engine protection bars

However, the Enduro package comes with a caveat: it must be ordered alongside the Premium package. It cannot be ordered alone.

So, in effect, you can consider this an upgrade—or an additional purchase—to the Premium package. What’s in the Premium package, you ask? Read on.

BMW R 1250 GS Premium Package

If you want a fully-outfitted GS, the Premium package is the option for you. With it you get everything from the Select package, plus these items:

  • Ride Modes Pro
  • Gear Shift Assist Pro
  • Dynamic Engine Brake Control (MSR)
  • Headlight Pro
  • Adaptive headlight
  • Dynamic ESA
  • Cruising light

BMW R 1250 GS Premium Package

This is a little easier to understand, right? With BMW’s new package options for the GS, you effectively get to choose what level of comfort or what level of technology you want your GS to have.

If from the start, all you want is to tap into the GS’ legendary off-road potential, then the decision-making process is even easier: you get the Premium package and add the Enduro option to it (or jump straight to the R 1250 GS Adventure).

Crafty readers will likely come up with ways to save a little money and have their GS suit their needs through the aftermarket. Say, with different wheel, tire, protection, suspension, or other features.

And while that’s the beauty of the aftermarket, getting the electronic upgrades direct from the factory is something the aftermarket won’t be able to provide – and can make all the difference in your enjoyment of your GS.

The decision is yours. This guide helps clear some confusion. Choose wisely.
